THE BATTLE OF THE LAW FIRM BANDS: A FUNDRAISER FOR GIFTS FOR THE HOMELESS
Washington, D.C., June, 2008 – Lawyers from prominent area law firms will compete in a hotly contested fifth annual Battle of the Law Firm Bands to benefit Gifts for the Homeless, Inc. (GFTH), a non-profit, all-volunteer organization supported by the city’s legal community to help the homeless. The Black Cat, a premier hot-spot in DC’s historic U Street district (1811 14th Street, NW), has partnered with GFTH to host “Banding Together 2008” on Thursday, June 19, from 7:00 pm to midnight.
At the stroke of midnight, one band will be crowned champion for having raised the most money from the crowd through “Chicago-style” voting (each dollar equals one vote – vote early and often!). GFTH will use 100% of the money donated to purchase thermal underwear, sweatshirts, sweatpants, hats, gloves, underwear, socks, blankets and other essential new clothing items for homeless men, women, and children; the clothing is distributed to more than [30] shelters throughout the metro area. GFTH has already raised over $67,000 in connection with Banding Together 2008, on the way to topping the almost $80,000 raised at last year’s event. Contributions continue to flow in.
GFTH chose the Black Cat as the site for “Banding Together” because of its unmatched reputation for great music. The Black Cat is a live music venue committed to providing the best in local, national and international independent alternative music. The Black Cat is also known for its delicious vegetarian and non-vegetarian food served until 1:00 am on week nights at the Food for Thought Café. “We are delighted that a great rock venue like the Black Cat has again generously partnered with us to host an event that is as much fun as it is worthwhile,” said GFTH board of directors member Walter Lohmann, the chief organizer of Banding Together 2008. To date, nearly 45 law firms and other companies have signed up as Banding Together 2008 sponsors and donors (listed on page 2 of this press release).
