Gifts for the Homeless, Inc. is a non-profit corporation comprised of lawyers and staff from area law firms and other legal organizations that has been serving the homeless of Washington, D.C. since 1986. GFTH holds a used clothing drive each December to serve area shelters and also raises money used to purchase new clothing for homeless men, women and children. Every dollar GFTH receives from donors is used to purchase essential clothing for the homeless in the DC metropolitan area.
Our annual Gifts for the Homeless Used Clothing Drive is on December 5-7, 2008!
- Location: The Portals III, located at D Street S.W., between 12th and 13th Streets. Metro (Blue and Orange Lines) or L’Enfant Plaza (Blue, Orange, Yellow, and Green Lines). (Note: Street address is 1201 Maryland Ave., S.W. Washington, D.C. 20024, but the entrance is on D Street, S.W. – signs with “GFTH” printed on them will be displayed in the windows).
- Times: Friday, December 5 (8:30 am to 6:30 pm); Saturday, December 6 (8:30 am to 6:30 pm); Sunday December 7 (8:30 am to 6:30 pm).
- Parking: Available at the building on all three days.
- Volunteer: Contact Ceceile Patterson (CPATTERS@skadden.com or 202-371-7695). We are looking for volunteers to help us sort the used clothing donations and deliver the donated items to the shelters we serve. Drivers with SUVs, vans, station wagons, and pick-up trucks needed!
- Donate Used Clothing Items: Please make a donation of used clothing, accessories (shoes, hats, gloves, winter scarves, etc.), sleeping bags, blankets, comforters, and toiletries. We particularly need coats, men’s clothing, and children’s clothing. “Plus” sizes are appreciated.
- Monetary Donations: Please consider making a donation to GFTH. 100% of every penny we receive is used to purchase essential new winter clothing items (thermal gloves, thermal socks, knit hats, sweatshirts, sweatpants, etc.) for homeless men, women and children in the D.C. metro area to help keep them a little bit warmer this winter!
- Free Gift Cards from Tutor.com for volunteers: Tutor.com, an on-line tutoring company, will be handing out gift cards at our sorting site (one per family) entitling the recipient to 40 “anytime” minutes with a certified tutor for on-line tutoring help in Math and Science (grades 5 through 12)!
